This will be a short review of the Mighty Hamptons Olympic Distance Tri.
The swim was a 1/2 mile and back, parallel to the beach in the very beautiful Noyak Bay in Sag Harbor. A plus because there were almost no currents churning about, and the water was warmer. I did not need a wetsuit as so many other people seemed to have had, for the 71 degree water. I came the day prior and did a test swim, and was pleasantly surprised that the water was a comfortable racing temperature.
The bike ride was full of rolling hills, I'd say not your typical flat tri course. A tri bike might be more challenging to use. I enjoyed getting off the seat a couple of times and then being able to accelerate fast on the downhills. Some of the turns were a bit too sharp, but if you practice the traffic control was excellent.
As for the run, I felt like my legs were made out of something spongy and hard at the same time, but I did warm up going into the false flat and was really able to speed up at the turnaround point. It was very straightforward, and beautiful of course.
I was wave 6 out of 6, all women participants 34 and younger. I was dissapointed that I had a lot of catching up to do, but at least I stayed with my age group because I had no clue until race day that I'd be that way.
I placed well, 1st in my age group (20-24), 5th woman overall, and a time of 2:34:59. The swim really was my worst part, which I wasn't expecting since I have a swimming background. However I've been out of the pool for 2 years, and 2 months might not have done enough justice. As for now, I am planning to do a couple of 5 and 10Ks, plan a half-ironman for sometime next year, and the eventual goal - to complete an Ironman someday. In the meantime I will take the winter season off to hit the weightroom and "fitten up" those arms and tummy of mine. Also get in some really good long distance runs to build a strong base.
As for the Mr. Athlete there, his marathon is just around the corner next month, can't wait!
